Spectrum Circus

Circus Monoxide has some free trial classes next Thursday, 27 September, 4-5pm for children 7-11 years old who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder and who may wish to consider a class that is being run at the same time next year. Please contact us on 4285 0066 if you are interested.

Spectrum Circus is aimed at children who might find a mainstream class difficult. Spectrum Circus will be running on Thursday afternoons 4-5pm at Circus Monoxide in Fairy Meadow in Term 4. The class aims to build circus and social skills while having fun in an ASD aware class.

This is a general circus class which will cover a range of basic circus skills and apparatus including mini tramp and tumbling, aerial silks and object manipulation with apparatus such as flower sticks, hula hoops, spinning plates, juggling scarves and balls. Having a go is an important aspect. Children will naturally find their own strengths and preferences among the variety of circus skills offered. Appreciating individual differences, taking turns, listening, following instructions, risk taking and bouncing back are some of the social skills which can also develop during the class.

This is the first time Circus Monoxide has offered a class specifically for children with ASD although for the past eight years we have worked with school groups of ASD students. Trainers for Spectrum Circus have some training, experience and support in working with ASD, so the class is taught and paced appropriately.

Any child with ADS is welcome to Spectrum Circus, although parents and carers should be aware that it is held at a time when a class of aerial students are working at the other end of the warehouse which may be too distracting for some. Please contact Circus Monoxide office on 4285 0066 to discuss your child joining this class.

Spectrum Circus costs $238 for the 10 week term. It is possible to pay for it through the NDIS if you are self-managed, or your plan has funds in Capacity Building: Social Community and Civic Participation. You will need to ring if you are booking through the NDIS.

Research and experience shows that that circus is a valuable activity for those on the spectrum, with its rich mix of fine and gross motor activities, circus and social skills all developed in a setting of having fun. A great after school activity!
